Eduction Trust
The Education trust will be funded to assist in
meeting tuition fees for the immediate children
of the miners. The trust will assist beneficiaries
up to university education in local institutions.
Housing Fund
The Housing Fund will provide a modest 5
roomed house of uniform design for the miners,
built in their places of origin in the local
community.
Health Care
In general, artisanal miners are unable to meet
health care costs. Our projects will capacitate
participants to meet health care needs for
themselves and their dependents.
Poverty Alleviation
Shondilo projects have the potential for poverty
alleviation, through provision of gainful self-
directed employment. On successful
implementation of initial projects in a region,
similar projects can be rolled out to more
communities in different mining districts in the
region, thus giving a wide application within a
country.
Secondary Improvement to the
Local Business Community
Improved buying power of a local mining
community will positively impact on the viability
of rural businesses within the area of coverage.
This positive impact on the wider community is
also likely to be accompanied by increased
demand on the food supply chain which will
benefit and support the rural farmers.
Empowerment through Mechanization
The introduction of mechanization increases the hoisted ore of a simple ASM operation
several fold, from a typical 8-10 tonnes per month to 700-750 tonnes plus. This increased
productivity and revenues will bring additional benefits through the altruistic element of
Shondilo’s methodology which enriches the lives of miners and their dependents through
re-investment in healthcare, education, and housing.
Rich in Mineral
Resources
Africa has a wealth of mineral
resources, however despite all this,
small-scale miners and their
families still languish in poverty. In
recent years, Governments across
the continent, in countries that are
rich with natural resources, have
recognized that this sector is key in
lifting people out of poverty, and
although they have started to
formalize ASM’s they have still not
found a solution to harness the
potential successfully.
Ethical Mining
Solution
Shondilo believe they have the
answer and over the past 6 years,
the Shondilo team have been
developing a methodology for
artisanal gold miners that will
empower communities, increase
productivity and improve the lives
of the artisanal miners and their
families.
Social
Upliftment
Shondilo Gold Mining Ventures
Limited was set-up to work with
these mining communities and,
through its ethical mining
commitment, empower these
communities by providing a
structured mine operation that
through their own efforts,
experience a sustainable future and
social upliftment that allows them
and their dependents to prosper
and have a healthy life.
Artisanal Mining
Sector
The Artisanal and Small-Scale
Mining (ASM) sector in Africa is
responsible for 18% of the
continents gold production and,
nearly all of Africa’s gemstones,
with the exception of diamonds.
The World Bank estimates that 10
million informal or artisanal small-
scale miners make a living from this
sector in Sub-Sahara Africa, with a
further 60 million dependents
reliant on this income. If you look at
the wider community, such as
agriculture and other parts of the
food supply chain, then this number
is far greater.
